I then used this guide to build libfdk-aac/ffmpeg/vlc http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2141949 However my command doesn't work on vlc master or 2.2 branches - no .ts file is written. so it's still as messy to install as it was when I did some like four years ago... It works perfectly so thankyou!! If you add "--prefix=/usr" to the x264 configure line then these files will also install in the same location as the repo versions instead of the default /usr/local/lib. Request was from Rémi Denis-Courmont

You need either libavcodec54 and libavutil52 or libavcodec-extra and libavutil-extra-52: (I think I make no use of these packages myself, but I have installed them long ago, and ended up with Cleaned up my folder of a previous failed build attempt and it seems to be okay now.

Add the medibuntu's repositories 3. Dunno what "-fPIC" means. I've tried to use handbrake, but when I select an avi file, it says "No Valid Title Found" next to the "Source" at the top of the window. I've got no idea what this code means.

lame was not built in because of enforced MP3 encoding patents. Wowza Media Server 2 forums are for a legacy version of Wowza media server software that's no longer updated. Using libavcodec51 instead of libavcodec-unstripped-51 leads to other serious problems like Bug #294502. Before I wrote this tutorial I tested the speed of x264 either using a compiled yasm 0.7.0, nasm from the repository, or no assembler.
