After removing the filter and restarting everything, a USB drive is now recognized and mounted by VM. My computer has both USB2 and USB3. Could be that vmware workstation usb drivers 3.0 for machine like mine are not working properly: WIth a mix of peripherals not using correct protocols and advertising with exotic ones on It operates fine if I plug the card reader into usb2 (it is a USB3 card reader).
