Somehow Unity lost the conflict in spite of being the default install. I have not run a search on that but if it is indeed in the repo it would be better to use it from there than the ppa. Reinstall Ubuntu (twice.) Nothing changed either time. There are actually other DEs that will work as well or better than Unity on a computer with a touch screen.
