It doesn't seem like it should be necessary to tell the OS that localhost and 127.0.0.1 are equivalent, but it works, at least. This caused the symptoms reported here. How can I claim compensation? So set the IP manually, as harrymc suggests: export DISPLAY="127.0.0.1:10.0" Then X11 programs should be fine.
