Now in Ubuntu Linux, few years ago they decided to use PulseAudio as the default sound server. Any idea how I could revert to a better situation (that is jack support and alsa working)? i gave the livecd a shot on the radeon-equipped ppc machine i'm borrowing (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/specs/powerbook_g4_1.33_15.html) and we had sound right out of the box. Have you installed all the proprietary codecs ? (otherwise, you won't be able to play most audio/video files in Ubuntu). *. the sound card on the computer has never worked, which is why i am using a usb headset. Now the next time you login to your Desktop you won't see the Volume Icon around the system tray area.

I reinstalled asla-utils package and ran "rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local.conf", which fixed the problem in 12.04.
Please, never install such untrusted third party packages again on your live system! Add User To Audio Group I've tried quite a few different players. I tried to do this from instructions from someone else and alsa installed but could not get the mixer to show up. The thing about PulseAudio is that (at least in my experience) it gives you all these awesome features, but for some reason it has never worked that well for me. when alsamixer was still working I did check the levels and it was not a case of the channels being muted.
